It is just not as easy as buying coins from a coin dealer and tossing them into a drawer at home. Without the proper precaution and care, your valuable coins could have their value diminished. Don't Touch With Your Bare Hands

Even if you thoroughly wash your hands, there are still natural oils that can come off of your hands and onto the coins. Those oils, while you might not be able to see them with the naked eye, can cause significant damage to the coins. When that happens, the value is impacted. When you do need to handle the coins, you will want to do so while wearing a clean pair of white cotton gloves.

Don't Wash Dirty Coins

Some of the coins purchased from a coin collection dealer could appear to be dirty. They may be old and have been circulated, but they can still hold a lot of value depending on what they are. The thing is though, many people make the mistake of assuming that they need to clean up those coins in order to increase their value. That is actually the last thing you want to do. Cleaning those coins could actually decrease their value, so it is better to leave them in the exact condition you received them in.

Always Assume You'll Drop The Coin

When handling coins from your collection, it is important to always assume that you are at risk for dropping them. This way, you will take extra precautions, such as laying a towel on the table and always holding the coins above the towel. This way, should an accident occur, the coin will drop onto a clean soft towel instead of falling onto the hard floor. The idea is to prevent any damage in the event the coin is dropped by mistake.
